Give Your Kitchen Some Shine with the Following Decor Ideas

Today I am bringing you a great article from my friend and fellow blogger, Kacey Mya. Kacey has shared with us here at The Command Center before and she always brings useful information to the blog when she visits. Enjoy her latest contribution below. Thank you, Kacey, for helping me while I deal with my mother’s illness and writing a fill-in article for me.

Your kitchen is the busiest room in the house…and it shows. No matter how much you scrub and scour the place, it doesn’t quite have the luster it once had.

Fortunately, there are so many easy ways to restore a bit of that visual shine to your kitchen. With a slick of paint or a few new accessories, you can bring a lot (or just a little) sparkle back to the space that’s the heart of your home.

Here are seven ideas on how to do it:

Kitchen

Update Your Cabinet’s Hardware

One of the easiest ways to bring shine — and, really, to update the look of your kitchen cabinets in general — is to swap out old, outdated or otherwise dull hardware. Even better news is that it only takes a few hours if you choose new knobs or pulls that match the holes already drilled into your cabinet doors.

Simply unscrew and remove your current hardware and replace it with the new set. Be sure to choose something shiny to achieve the look you want: stainless steel, brass, crystal… the possibilities are endless.

Add a Vase

Another way to add a bit of bling is to do so quite literally with a new crystal vase. The presence of freshly cut flowers always breathes new life into a space but placing them into a shiny crystal vase — or one made of a similarly light-catching material. Just make sure you regularly pick up new flowers or fill the vase with something evergreen so that you can keep your vase on the countertop year-round.

Clean Your Windows

How much natural light is making its way into your kitchen? The sun’s rays can certainly add a nice sheen, especially when cast through sparklingly clean windows. It’s not a job that has to be done often when done right: start by wiping down the sills, windows, frame and hardware with an all-purpose cleaner before applying a window-specific solution to restore them to the shiny finish you seek.

Re-Paint the Walls

Another element that could be adding to your kitchen’s less-than-glowing appearance is the paint color. Rather than a simple beige, a dull gray or deep blue hue, try something that’s lighter and shinier. A truly white wall, for example, could really brighten up the space, as could a fresh coat of white paint on cabinets. Just make sure you heed tip number one on this list and update your hardware so that they match your newly brightened walls.

Add New Lighting

We’ve already mentioned the fact that natural light can restore a bit of glow to your kitchen. But artificial bulbs can make a big difference, too, especially after the sun goes down. Start by examining your overhead lighting that’s already there. If you have fluorescent, bright-white bulbs that cast a cold glow, replace those with warmer-hued versions. Once the lights are a suitable shade, you’ll want to use them more often.

You can also try adding task lighting beneath the upper tier of cabinets to illuminate your counters and whatever you might be doing on them. You can also add lighting to the baseboard of your cabinet, which accentuates your cabinets and makes a great little nightlight if you need a midnight snack.

Swap Cabinet Doors For Glass

A wall of cabinets is certainly great for storage, but not many cabinets can bring the shine you’re looking for. By simply swapping out the front wooden panel for something that’s actually shiny — glass — you’ll add the glean you seek.

Just because you choose to go with glass doesn’t mean all of your kitchenware and foodstuffs will be in plain sight. You can choose a frosted or etched design that only hints at what’s behind the glass in order to keep your organizational system — or lack thereof — hidden from the naked eye.

Install a Tin Backsplash

Another easy weekend project that creates a whole light of shine is the installation of a tin backsplash. Unlike ceramic tiles — which require multiple days and precise, professional installation — tin ceiling tiles can completely transform the look of your backsplash in a matter of hours.

You’ll still have to measure and snip the tiles to fit in some cases, but the installation is so simple that you only need a caulk gun and a latex-based adhesive. With that and a few weekend hours, you can have a blinged-out tin backsplash that not only looks amazing but also protects your kitchen walls from the inevitable cooking splashes to come.

Make It Shine

If these tips prove anything, it’s how easily you can make your kitchen shine. An afternoon cleaning session or new crystal vase could have things glowing instantly, while a brand-new backsplash or coat of paint could make the entire space new again. But now, it’s up to you how much shine you need — and how quickly you’ll get to work on making your bright-kitchen dreams a reality.
