Stay Safe And Comfortable During A Heatwave

I don’t know about you guys, but in our area, the heat has been brutal. It feels like 112 degrees outside today. I am praying extra hard recently because I do not want to go to that really hot place when life is done. Seriously, surviving a long-term heat wave requires a mix of preparation, smart daily habits, and attention to your body’s needs. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you stay safe and comfortable during a heatwave.

Stay Safe And Comfortable During A Heatwave

  1. Stay Cool Indoors
  • Use fans and AC efficiently: Place fans near windows at night to bring in cooler air. During the day, close blinds/curtains to block sunlight.
  • Create a DIY air cooler: Place a bowl of ice in front of a fan to cool the airflow.
  • Limit oven/stove use: Opt for no-cook meals, salads, or grill outside in the shade.

  1. Hydrate Consistently
  • Drink water frequently, even if you’re not thirsty. Add electrolytes or a pinch of salt if sweating heavily.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks—they can dehydrate you.
  • Eat hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and yogurt.

  1. Dress for Survival
  • Wear lightweight, loose, and light-colored clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
  • Use cooling towels or soak a bandana in cold water to wrap around your neck.
  1. Optimize Your Home
  • Create a cooling zone in your home—preferably on the lowest level. Spend most of your time there.
  • Insulate and seal: Weather-strip doors/windows to keep the heat out and cool air in.
  • Use reflective window film or blackout curtains to reduce heat penetration.

  1. Sleep Smarter
  • Sleep in light sheets, or try dampening a top sheet slightly and using a fan.
  • Cool down before bed: A lukewarm shower can lower your core body temp just enough to help you sleep.
  1. Change Your Schedule
  • Avoid strenuous activity between 11 AM and 4 PM.
  • Exercise early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.
  • Run errands in bursts and stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

  1. Protect Vulnerable People
  • Check on elderly neighbors or relatives, young children, and people with chronic illnesses.
  • Never leave anyone (including pets) in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  1. Watch for Heat Illness

Know the signs of:

  • Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse.
  • Heat stroke (medical emergency): confusion, no sweating, high body temp. Call 911 immediately.

  1. Close both windows and blinds when it’s hot outside, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Here’s why:

Blinds and Curtains:

  • Block out direct sunlight, which can raise indoor temperatures significantly.
  • Dark or blackout curtains are especially effective at keeping rooms cooler.
  • Reflective or thermal-backed curtains help bounce heat back outside.

Windows:

  • Keep them closed during the day to trap cooler air inside and prevent hot air from entering.
  • Open them at night or early morning if it’s cooler outside, to let in fresh, cooler air.

How To Curate And Decorate A Small Room

Pro Tip:

  • Use light-colored blinds or curtains to reflect sunlight.
  • For extra heat protection, hang a blanket or reflective emergency blanket behind curtains.

Bonus Tips:

  • Freeze washcloths and keep them in a bag in the freezer.
  • Use a spray bottle with cold water to mist your face and body.
  • Sleep with a frozen water bottle at your feet.

Long-term heat waves can be exhausting and even dangerous—but with the right strategies, you can stay safe, cool, and resilient. Remember when heat waves linger, it’s not just about comfort—it’s about health, safety, and finding small ways to reclaim your peace despite the temperature. Stay as cool as possible. Excellent post and so timely! People exposed to extreme heat w/o knowledge are at risk of serious illness. Thanks for writing and sharing this information. Pinned!

Thank you friend. We have lost a few people in our area due to heat related consequences. We now have cooling centers available. Thanks for stopping through.
