How To Clean Your Home After The Christmas Holiday
Cleaning your home after the Christmas holiday can feel like a big task, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make the process easier. Here’s a guide to help you get started and get your home all warm and cozy for the upcoming winter season. How To Clean Your Home After The Christmas Holiday.
- Take Down Decorations
- Ornaments and Lights: Remove ornaments and lights carefully from the tree. Wrap lights neatly to avoid tangling next year. I like to store ornaments by color. For example, red and white ornaments are in one bin while gold and silver are in another. I divide the container with thick cardboard cut to fit.
- Pack Decorations: Use labeled bins for storing ornaments, wreaths, and other decorations. Use bubble wrap for fragile items.
- Tree Removal: For real trees, check your local recycling guidelines. Artificial trees should be stored in their original box or a designated tree bag.
- Declutter Holiday-Related Items
- Gift Wrap: Recycle wrapping paper and boxes. Save ribbons and reusable bags for next year.
- Unwanted Gifts: Donate or regift items you won’t use.
- Expired or Leftover Food: Discard anything past its prime. Organize your pantry and fridge to make room for fresh groceries.
- Unused Ornaments and/or Decorations: While putting your ornaments away, this is a great time to purge those ornaments that no longer bring you joy or is not your style any longer.
- Deep Clean the Living Spaces
- Vacuum and Dust: Focus on areas where decorations were placed and under the tree. Pine needles and glitter tend to get everywhere! Oh, the glitter! Vacuum your couches and chairs because I don’t know how it gets there but don’t forget to vacuum under the chair cushions because glitter gets there as well.
- Spot Clean: Check for any spills or stains from holiday celebrations and clean them promptly.
- Furniture Reset: Rearrange furniture back to its original layout after moving it for the tree or holiday gatherings.
- Freshen Up the Kitchen
- Appliances: Deep clean your oven, microwave, and dishwasher after holiday cooking.
- Surfaces: Wipe down counters, cabinets, and backsplash to remove grease and crumbs.
- Utensils and Serveware: Wash and store special holiday items like serving platters and cookie cutters.
- Reset Common Areas
- Linens: Wash holiday tablecloths, napkins, and throw blankets.
- Floors: Mop and polish hardwood or tile floors, especially if you had high foot traffic.
- Windows and Mirrors: Clean to remove fingerprints or smudges from holiday guests.
- Refresh Bedrooms and Bathrooms
- Bedding: Wash sheets and pillowcases if guests stayed over.
- Towels: Swap out holiday-themed towels for regular ones.
- Declutter: Put away extra toiletries or bedding brought out for guests.
- Organize and Plan Ahead
- Store Smartly: Pack holiday items together and label boxes by room or type.
- Inventory Check: Make a list of items you need to restock for next year, like lights or wrapping paper.
- Donate or Dispose: Clear out anything you didn’t use this season to avoid clutter. This decluttering is not just about Christmas decorations. This is also a great time to donate linens you no longer enjoy or need.
- Add Final Touches
- Scent Refresh: Light a candle or use an air freshener to remove any lingering holiday odors.
- Plants and Greenery: Replace dying poinsettias or wreaths with fresh indoor plants.
- Personalize: Rearrange your usual décor to make your home feel cozy again.
Cleaning after the holidays can be a reflective time to declutter and reset your home for the new year. Happy tidying!
