How to Prepare Your Home for the Fall Season
As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, fall invites us to slow down, get cozy, and prepare our homes for the months ahead. Whether you’re dreaming of warm blankets, pumpkin spice, or a clutter-free space before the holidays hit, here’s your go-to guide to getting your home ready for fall. Let’s get started with How to Prepare Your Home for the Fall Season.
- Start With a Fall Cleaning Session
Before you bring out the fall décor, start with a clean slate.
- Dust baseboards, ceiling fans, and vents
- Deep clean carpets and floors
- Wash windows to let in that beautiful autumn light
- Declutter summer items and donate what you no longer need
- Cozy Up With Layers
Time to swap out light summer textiles for warm, comfy layers.
- Add throws and extra blankets to living spaces and bedrooms
- Switch pillow covers to deeper, warmer tones or textures like velvet and knit
- Use area rugs to add warmth, especially on hardwood or tile floors
- Transition Your Decor
Fall decorating doesn’t have to be all orange pumpkins—choose your style!
- Add touches of nature like pinecones, acorns, dried wheat, or eucalyptus
- Try neutral or jewel-toned pumpkins for a fresh look
- Incorporate warm lighting—candles, lanterns, and string lights add ambiance
- Do a Seasonal Maintenance Check
Fall is the perfect time to get ahead of winter prep.
- Clean gutters and check for blockages
- Seal windows and doors to prevent drafts
- Get your fireplace inspected and cleaned
- Change HVAC filters and check smoke detector batteries
- Refresh Your Kitchen for Fall Cooking
Fall means comfort food, soups, and baking!
- Organize your pantry and toss expired items
- Make space for seasonal staples like canned pumpkin, cinnamon, and broth
- Bring out your slow cooker or Dutch oven
- Add a Touch of Fall to Your Entryway
First impressions count!
- Hang a seasonal wreath
- Place a cozy doormat or fall-themed rug
- Add potted mums or pumpkins near the door
- Swap Out Summer for Fall in the Closets
Make it easy to dress for crisp mornings.
- Store away swimsuits and sandals
- Bring out sweaters, boots, scarves, and jackets
- Donate summer clothing you didn’t wear
- Embrace the Fall Atmosphere
Create a warm and inviting vibe indoors.
- Use essential oils or candles in scents like cinnamon, clove, apple, or vanilla
- Play soft instrumental or acoustic playlists
- Keep a cozy book or magazine stack nearby

Absolutely loved this post. I also love the idea of using carpets to make the space “warmer” in all senses. They can work like insulation, which is very beneficial if you have cold floors with drafts. But I have to mention that if you have radiant floor heating, it can do more harm than good, especially if it’s a big enough expensive carpet. Thick carpets with thick underlay can create a barrier between the heated floor and the room, reducing usable heat output and you end up wondering why it’s still so cold even with heating running all day. If you want rugs and have radiant floor heating, choose something thin, low pile, and not too big.
Hi Keith. Thank you for the information. I do not have radiant floors but perhaps some other readers may. Your advice is great for those that do have radiant floors. Thanks for stopping by.
